Buckden Pike

Buckden Pike

7th highest mountain in the Dales, coming in at 702m.

Supposedly this mountain has the best views in all of the Dales.  I wouldn’t know if this is true or not though.  I will probably be walking up it again shortly, maybe the weather will be kinder this time?

The perfect views on Buckden

This walk starts in Buckden at the carpark.  There are a few different routes you can take up Buckden but I’ve only walked this route currently.  There is a great carpark with toilets at the start in Buckden.   Take cash though as the paying machine has been temperamental every time I’ve tried to pay by card.   The path is at the back of the carpark and you’re instantly walking uphill following a track.

You’ll eventually come to a finger post.  The post looks like it directs you straight up the hill.  Don’t walk in that direction, use your map and walk diagonally up the hill through some mud.  We followed the finger board and it’s not the best route, this is where Rachel fell and injured herself.

Stunning views out over Wharfedale

The path is fairly easy to follow until you come to some preservation work.  Limestone steps have been added to make it slippery in wet conditions whilst walking back downhill.  I think it’s because the people doing the work like to add extra difficulty to the walk, but it’s probably because of erosion which is very evident as you walk up.

At the summit there is a good trig.  There was some work happening up there last year and lots of bags of stuff were on top of the mountain. It may well look different when I next go up there?

There is a polish war memorial about a mile from the trig.  I haven’t visited it because the weather was very poor.

I think when I next try the walk I’ll try for a circular walk, but once again it will be weather dependent.
