The weather has been a bit against us recently with how cold and snowy it has been. We took the decision not to go for a proper walk last weekend. We did however manage to get out for a reservoir walk at the end of December.
We took a trip to Marsden and parked up in the village. Marsden is based in Kirklees not that far from Huddersfield. I was excited by this walk as I don’t often venture out towards the peak district.
The first reservoir you walk past is Butterley Reservoir. It has a decent path and was very popular with walkers. Henry was being very naughty and misbehaving when he saw any other dogs. In fact it felt like he had forgotten all his training from the dog school.

Continuing on the path you see some good waterfalls on the right and people were climbing up steps near there. Looking at the OS maps I think that it’s part of the Pennine Way and heads off to some further reservoirs that we didn’t visit.

Continuing along the path we then came to our second reservoir, Wessenden Reservoir. After the reservoir the path changed a bit and it became a little more wild but still with plenty of people on the path.

Our third and last reservoir on our walk was Wessenden Head reservoir. We decided to walk over the reservoir embankment to see if it was possible to walk down the other side of the reservoirs to make it a circular walk. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible from this point so we turned around and headed back.

Our end of the line path where we turned around and headed back.
Thankfully Henry redeemed himself on the way back as we learnt a new trick to get Henry to walk around dogs without any reaction. He even met another reactive dog and he didn’t respond. I was feeling very proud of him on the way home and I’m hopeful that maybe we’ve cracked that bit of behaviour.
It was a good walk on a damp day and took us just over 3 hours and was 11.64km in total.
I’d like to revisit this area as looking on the OS map I can see it’s relatively close to a couple of trig points. I love bagging a trig.
